REUTERS/Paulo Whitaker/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsMEXICO CITY, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Brazilian fintech Nubank's Mexico arm has requested a banking license from local regulators, the unit's top executive said on Thursday, describing it as a bid to broaden product offering. A banking license would allow Nubank to offer "diverse kinds of investments," including shares in Mexico's main stock index, the company said in a statement to Reuters. Other opportunities stemming from a banking license include handling direct deposits of salaries for customers and setting higher deposit limits, Nubank Mexico head Ivan Canales said in an interview. Canales did not provide a timeline for obtaining the license in what is Nubank's second-biggest market after Brazil. Funding for Nubank's expansion plans will come from parent company Nu Holdings (NUN.MX) and deposits made by their customers, said Canales.

Republicans, led by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, want to attach spending cuts to any agreement to raise the debt ceiling. Biden and the Democrats say they are willing to talk about spending cuts but only outside the debt ceiling discussions. Raising the debt ceiling would allow the government to pay for spending that has already occurred. That year, the debt ceiling was raised at the last minute but not before a summer of bickering sent the S & P 500 down 17% from late July to mid-August. The market this past week stumbled with the debt ceiling deadline looming and over concern about regional bank failures.

Several years of success for fintechs resulted in a significant disruption of the traditional banking industry and significant responses from big players in the space. Chime, which was valued at $1.5 billion in 2019, reached a valuation of $25 billion in 2021. The company became profitable on an EBITDA basis during the pandemic, co-founder and CEO Chris Britt told CNBC in September 2020. Chime was among the companies expected to have pursued an IPO by now, but it has been waiting out a frozen market for new offerings. In November, Chime laid off 12% of its workforce, or about 160 people, in a move that Britt said would help the company thrive "regardless of market conditions."
